Writer In Residence

Máire Holmes

Kerry County Council is delighted to announce that Máire Holmes is Kerry County Council’s writer in residence 2016 / 2017 (co-funded by the Arts Council).

Máire has a lifetime’s experience in literature. She is the author of many poetry books and plays. She has been writer in residence in Mayo, Connemara and the Aran Islands, and most recently in Kerry in 2015.

She is an experienced facilitator of all ages and levels and is a recipient of many arts awards, and an MA in Writing from NUIG.

In April 2016 her poem Margadh was unveiled on a plaque on Church Yard Street, Galway during the Cúirt International Festival of Literature.

Film maker in Residence

Ciara Hyland

Kerry County Council is delighted to announce that Ciara Hyland is Kerry County Council’s new filmmaker in residence (co-funded by the Arts Council).

Since 2009, Ciara has worked freelance in research and production on documentaries and long running series for RTE and TG4. Her credits include the traditional music series “Geantraí” for TG4, the “Fleadh Cheoil” series for RTE and “Spillane an Fánaí” with singer/ songwriter John Spillane for TG4. She recently started working as a Segment Producer/ Director and Editor for Duiche series for TG4. In 2016 she started producing and directing documentary segments for Nationwide RTE through Pioneer Media.

In 2016, Ciara directed a documentary commission for TG4 – ‘Diarmuid Lynch – Óglach Dearmadta (The Forgotten Volunteer). Broadcasting on TG4 on Easter Monday 2016 at 7.30pm, it’s the story of Diarmuid Lynch, the last man out of the GPO whom history subsequently forgot.

Ciara has an interest in digital storytelling and intends to use this during the course of her residency to bring filmmaking to more people in Kerry.

Dancer in Residence

Catherine Young

Catherine Young is the 2016 – 2016 Kerry County Council Dancer in Residence, which is co-funded by the Arts Council.
Under the terms of the residency, Catherine will:
1. Develop her own work as inspired by Kerry, both people and place.
2. Provide a 6 week dance programme for first years in post primary schools which will complement the existing DES JCPE Programme. The PE teacher will receive CPD and support thus enabling the PE teacher to continue and sustain the programme when the Dancer in Residence has completed the first programme.
3. Encourage interested students to join a Kerry youth dance company. The purpose of the dance company will be to provide high quality dance performance training in addition to creative practice and choreography over a 3 year cycle with a view to developing a demand for the provision of a level 5 QQI qualification in dance in Kerry. To develop repertoire to tour and showcase the work including Kerry venues and festivals.
4. Develop and provide a QQI L5 Dance Course in cooperation with Kerry College of Further Education.

Maria Svensson

Maria Svensson is Dancer in Residence in An Lab, Dingle for the period Sept 2016 – Sept 2017 which is co-funded by the Arts Council and Kerry County Council. Projects include working with different groups in Kerry and Maria is currently working with Caherleaheen National School and Scoil Chaitlin Naofa, she is also teaching a creative dance class for adults in An Lab. As part of the residency Maria aim to create new work with support by mentor and Artistic Director of Echo Echo Dance Theatre Company, Steve Batts. As part of the residency this new work will then tour Kerry. Maria is also planning to replicate the solo dance festival Going Solo Together which takes place annually in Örebro (SE) to happen in An Lab next year with local, national and international artists.

About Maria:
Maria Svensson holds a BA (Hons) in Dance Theatre from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, London and has worked as a dance artist since 2007 in mainly Sweden, London and Ireland (Dans i Värmland, Daghdha Dance Company, Being Small Dance). She has numerous experiences in performing, choreographing and producing festivals and events (International Dance Day, Choreography Showcase, Going Solo Together), as well as teaching to a range of ages and levels. Her focus lies with performance and interweaving dance with other art forms with a particular interest in how dance can make a difference in society.
